"Who makes them?" said the little prince.
"No one knows who makes them," said the fox. "They are just there, like the sky at night. They are a mystery."
"Where are they?" said the little prince.
"In the house of the witch," said the fox. "She keeps them in a great chest, which is full of other mysterious things. The blue curtains are her favorite thing, and she never tires of looking at them."
"Why does she keep them?" said the little prince.
"Because they are beautiful," said the fox. "They are like a dream, and she likes to dream."
"Do you know who the witch is?" said the little prince.
"No," said the fox. "But I have heard of her. She is very old, and she lives in a tower which is all alone in the middle of a great forest. She is a good witch, and she does not make people suffer."
"She does not make people suffer?" said the little prince. "Then why does she keep the blue curtains?"
"Because they are beautiful," said the fox again. "And because they are a mystery. She likes to have something which is neither good nor bad, but which one cannot explain."
"I should like to see the witch and her blue curtains," said the little prince. "But how can I find her?"
"You can ask the way to her house," said the fox. "You will meet other people on the way who will tell you how to find her."
"Why does she live in a tower?" said the little prince.
"Because she is afraid of men," said the fox. "She does not want to be married, and she does not want to have anything to do with men."
"She is afraid of men?" said the little prince. "Then why does she keep the blue curtains?"
"Because they are beautiful," said the fox for the third time. "And because they are a mystery. She likes to have something which is neither good nor bad, but which one cannot explain."
